LIFTING AGE LIMIT

ENTEBBE - President Yoweri Museveni has opened up on the ongoing debate around the lifting of the age limit, describing it as mere speculation which the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has not sanctioned.

He also warned of dire consequences for the political actors behind the unsanctioned debate on lifting the age limit.

Museveni described as idle the people propagating rumours around the possibility that Article 102 (b) - which capped the eligibility to stand for President between 35 and 75 years - is going to be lifted.

"Part of the rumour is that there is a debate about age limit; what are you debating? Which proposal are you debating or talking about? Where is the proposal?" Museveni asked reporters Wednesday during a press conference at State House, Entebbe.

The president explained that although he is aware that some people are talking about the age limit, he is too busy to listen.

He was responding to a question from the media on whether he is the brains behind the now spreading proposal to amend the Constitution and lift the age limit cap.

"I hear about it, but I am not bothered about that. I am busy," he said, warning the propagators of dire political consequences.

"They should know that there will be counter-political actions. When we are ready to answer them, they will not like it. We maintain our forward movement; we cannot be diverted. I have not even had time to listen to what they are doing. That is speculation," Museveni said.

NRM provoked

Museveni underscored the fact that a group of NRM supporters, led by his private political assistant David Mafabi, who this week convened at Kati Kati Restaurant in Kampala to rally support around lifting the age limit, were provoked.

"If he [Mafabi] made a statement, it must be because of the provocation," he said, without naming the people who could have provoked NRM into the lifting of the age limit debate.

"You cannot debate something which is not yet proposed. If it is brought, we shall debate it," he said.
