The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is a semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, which established by the Animal Breeding Act, 2001. The Centre is charged with a mandate of spearheading all breeding activities in the country

THE KUROILER BIRD:

A DUAL PURPOSE BIRD BRED TO MEET RURAL HOUSEHOLD NUTRIONAL NEEDS AND INCREASE INCOMES

NAGRC &DB EXTENDS 2,000,000 KUROILER BIRDS TO 5000 HOUSEHOLDS IN 90 DISTRICTS OF UGANDA TO STRENGTHENING FOOD SECURITY AND POVERTY ALLEVIATION THROUGH REARING KUROILER BIRDS

The Kuroiler is a back yard hybrid chicken which was imported under government intervention to improve rural household nutrition and increase incomes.

It is a scavenging bird which yields better than the indigenous birds under scavenging conditions. Whereas Kuroilers looks like the local chickens in appearance, their production is relatively higher.

The Kuroiler hens can lay between 150-200 eggs in a year compared to the 40eggs produced by the indigenous birds. A Kuroiler cock can weigh between 3-4 kg within four months.
