Schools are stuck with huge quantities of expired chemicals.

EDUCATION

Hello, here is a sneak peek into what your weekly New Vision education pullout Mwalimu (comes out every Wednesday) has in stock for you. Oh, and before we get down to that, a reminder that you can read the full paper online HERE.

SCHOOLS STUCK

Thousands of schools around the country are stuck with stockpiles of expired, and in certain cases, excess chemicals, delivered by the education ministry a couple of years ago.

A New Vision survey has discovered that schools are stuck with huge quantities of expired chemicals supplied in 2012 under a $150m (sh540b) World Bank loan.

The survey followed a report by the education ministry on the implementation of the Adaptable Program Loan1 showing very low usage of chemical kits and instructional materials it supplied under the World Bank project.

KYESWA HELPS STUDENTS MAKE SOAP, CHALK

It  is a normal school day at Viva College in Jinja, save for the fact that a group of students, instead of sitting in class with a teacher in front of them, are dressed in gloves and head gear, running up and down, mixing chemicals.

These students are making chalk, and another group in a room, at the extreme end of the campus, is making liquid soap.

This is part of the training that almost all students in this school are expected to embrace, on top of their normal class work. But, most importantly, it is the teacher behind this concept: John Kyeswa.

NAMUGONGO'S 50 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

A giant gate stands at the entrance to one of the country's best performing schools - Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo.

Just after the gate is a big statue of the Virgin Mary; a permanent reminder of the school's Catholic Church foundation. Just beyond the statue, contractors are busy putting final touches to a magnificent storeyed building.

The gate itself is new.

On Saturday July 22, the new gate and administrative complex will officially be commissioned as part of celebrations to mark the school's Golden Jubilee - 50 years of existence. Don't miss this unique story in New Vision's Mwalimu pullout.
