PARLIAMENT

KAMPALA - It is now official. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, best known as Bobi Wine, is now the new MP of Kyadondo East.

This, after he took oath as the area representative in parliament on Tuesday at around 2.20pm local time.

He was sworn in by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga at the parliamentary building in Kampala.

After taking the oath of allegiance, Kadaga handed Kyagulanyi copies of the Constitution and the rules of procedure of Parliament.

"Honorable Kyagulanyi, I congratulate and welcome you to the 10th Parliament. Here is a copy of the rules of procedure and the Constitution. Study them and they will guide you," she addressed the 35-year-old fresh legislator.

Being an independent MP, Kyagulanyi was asked to choose his preferred side of the House on which to sit, and he picked the opposition side.

The House has two sitting sides, the NRM side on the right and the opposition side on the left of the chambers of Parliament. An independent MP is at liberty to choose which side of the House to sit on.

Bobi Wine was earlier in the day escorted to Parliament by hundreds of his supporters who were blowing vuvuzelas and waving Ugandan flags.

At Parliament where many of his supporters were locked out, he was accompanied by his wife Barbara Itungo (Barbie), his brothers Eddy Yawe and  Chairman Nyanzi, local artistes Nubian Lee, Hilderman among other family members.

Kyagulanyi was elected Kyadondo East MP on June 29, after defeating  his four challengers, including NRM's Sitenda Ssebalu and FDC's Apollo Kantinti.
