Three people lost their lives in a grisly accident along the Kampala -Luweero highway, when a Masindi bound commuter mini bus collided with a pick-up on Friday night.

Several other passengers were rushed to various hospitals in Luweero and Kampala after they sustained serious injuries.

The Friday 8.30 pm accident took place at Butanza village about 32 miles on the Kampala Luweero highway in Luweero district.

The savannah region police spokesman Paul Kangavve on Saturday identified the dead as Julius Okia, Christine Turyaguruka and Athbert Muhumuza, all residents of Masindi.

Kangavve attributed the accident to reckless driving. He said the pick-up which was heading to Kampala from Luweero collided head on with the speeding taxi which was moving in the opposite direction.

The police recovered bottles of beer from the pick-up when the driver fled after the accident.

A witness James Sebalu said that after the collision, the commuter taxi rolled several times ejecting some of the victims on the road pavement and trapping others inside..

All the dead and the injured were travelling in the taxi. The mangled wreckage of the taxi was towed to the nearby Wobulenzi police station.
