KAMPALA - The body of former Kampala Mayor and Democratic Party (DP) president John Ssebaana Kizito was Thursday morning brought to City Hall for KCCA officers and politicians to pay tribute to the fallen veteran politician.

The casket containing the remains of one of Uganda's longest-serving politicians was received by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, his deputy Sarah Kanyike, KCCA executive director Jennifer Musisi and other officials.

It was then wheeled to the Lord Mayor's Parlour for members to pay tribute in a special session.

Deputy Lord Mayor Kanyike, while moving a motion, lauded Ssebaana for the works he did to uplift the city. He was elected in a 1999 by-election to replace Haji Nasser Ssebagala.

Kanyike said that although Ssebaana joined the council in mid-term, he consolidated unity and ensured they finished the term well.

Despite majority of councilors being DP at the time, she said he was able to work with NRM representatives very well and appointed them to various positions.

Ssebaana's lobbying for funds to construct the Nakivubo Channel was well utilized and the balance used to build the Rubaga and Kampala Central Division head offices.

Roads were also built especially in Makindye as well as installation of street lights in Gaba, Kabalagala and Kansang.a

The then-mayor also passed a number of ordinances, including the Solid Waste Management and Private Schools ordinances.
