Six new districts pick interim chairpersons

The Electoral Commission kick-started the process of electing interim chairpersons in the newly-created districts Monday.

The districts are Bunyangabu, Butebo, Kyotera, Namisindwa, Pakwach and Rukiga.

According to EC chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the elections are being conducted at the respective headquarters of the new districts.

"The Interim Local Government Council shall elect an interim chairperson from among the members of the council by secret ballot.

"No person shall be declared elected interim chairperson unless that person gets over 50 percent of the votes of all the members of the Council cast in his or her favour," said Byabakama.

He added:  "The quorum at a meeting for election of an interim chairperson shall be two thirds of all the members of the Interim Council."
