The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) has embarked on a programme to take the game to the different regions of the country.

According to UCF boss Emmanuel Mwaka, the inaugural regional schools chess league starts Saturday at Jinja Senior Secondary School.

Mwaka said the event is aimed at growing numbers and spreading the game.

"Chess is not a new sport in the country and it's also one of those games that are more common among  people in the city centre. We therefore saw the need to spread it to the remote areas of the country," Mwaka said.

"This program also helps us groom future leaders and players."

The week-long tournament will move to Entebbe and the central region on July 9 and 2 respectively.

Mengo Senior Secondary School will host participating schools from the central region while schools from Entebbe region will be hosted by MaryLand Katabi.
