Criminal cases have stalled in the courts of law as state prosecutors hold a meeting to decide whether to go on strike or not, over meagre pay.

Early today all cases that were coming up for hearing at the anti-corruption court, Magistrate's courts and the high Court were adjourned due to the absence of the state attorneys.

The prosecutors under their umbrella association, Uganda Association of Prosecutors are protesting against the low pay yet the work load is enormous.

A source within the prosecutors' association told New Vision that they earn between sh600, 000 and sh1.2m yet they have to represent government in court on a daily basis while also perusing through police files to give legal advice.

However, in a press release to the various media houses, the Spokesperson Judiciary, Solomon Muyita said that they are aware of the meeting but the courts will stay open to conduct normal operations.

"The courts shall continue receiving, registering all cases normally and hearing civil and criminal matters, until state attorneys/prosecutors are available for court business," he said.
