Jinja Golf Club’s Martha Babirye’s passion that saw her compete in Jinja and Kampala on the same day, won her the Gadies and Lentlemen championship at Kitante.

The 21-year old, handicap 10 lady golfer showed stamina returning 71 nett to beat a strong field of experienced golfers to the top prize in the one day Guaranty Trust Bank sponsored  tournament.

After an early morning 18 holes in the Eskom tournament at Jinja Club, Babirye travelled to Kampala and competed in the ladies section organized tournament, to surprise many.

“I have so many people supporting me in this game so I’m working hard not to disappoint them. It wasn’t difficult playing off the men’s tee because I was actually advised to practice from their tees in order to improve my game so it wasn’t new to me,” Babirye said after she received her trophy and golf bag from GT Bank managing director Martins Omotoso.

“I actually want to work hard and win this year’s Uganda Ladies open,”Babirye who won his first overall prize at Kitante stated.

For the Lentlemen winner John Karionji, playing off the ladies tee was fun and jokingly said he wouldn’t mind “undergoing an operation to play as a lady” next time.

GT Bank used the one-day tournament to launch their Master Card on the Ugandan market.
