Government to build volleyball stadium in Kumi

The patron of Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF), Christine Hellen Amongin Aporu, has appealed to Government to construct a permanent volleyball stadium in Kumi town in memory of the late Dr. George Edward Aporu Okol. 

By the time he passed on, he was the patron of the federation. 

Aporu supported the development of grassroots volleyball in the greater Kumi district where he founded Termites Volleyball Club. 

UVF put the Dr. Aporu International Volleyball Championships in Kumi in memory of his contribution to the game. The tournament has grown from 1993 to date from a domestic tournament to an international one. 

"It is my dream that one day we are going to have a permanent playground for volleyball in Kumi," Amongin said during the closure of the 25th edition of the tournament held at Kumi Boma Ground on Sunday. 

She however clarified that government has accepted to build the stadium only that she's not aware of the timeline. 

She called on the area MPs, and Government to ensure that the stadium is built very soon in order to help nurture young talent in the region and country as a whole. 

"Right now there are 1,000 children from Teso who have been sponsored by various institutions in the country because of playing volleyball, a sign that Dr. Aporu's legacy is living on," she said. 

Amongin who was also married to Aporu announced that that there are plans to have the volleyball gala in the district rotated in the Sub Counties in order to tap grassroot talents.
