Athletes scramble to qualify for World Championships

Hope is not lost for Uganda to get in more qualifiers before the July 23 deadline

Uganda's team to the World Athletics Championships still stands at eleven qualified athletes with a couple of others still trying to put their best foot forward in a bid to hit the qualifying marks.

The latest attempt was at the 19th edition Akii Bua Memorial event over the weekend at Namboole where Halima Nakaayi, already qualified for the Worlds, was the most impressive runner on the day.

The 800m runner came home in 2:01.42 which was 42 microseconds outside the qualifying time of 2:01.00.

Uganda Athletics Federation spokesman Namayo Mawerere says hope is not lost for Uganda to get in more qualifiers before the July 23 deadline, ahead of the Worlds which will take place in the British capital, London, August 5-13.

"There are six weeks until July 23, the point here is for athletes to intensify work and try to hit the qualifying standards. I am sure we can get in more people," Mawerere said.

Uganda's rich cast of qualified runners is led by the iconic Stephen Kiprotich who struck marathon gold at the London 2012 Olympics and the 2015 Worlds in Moscow.

Four other Ugandans are already well within the marathon qualifying mark; the latest entrant being Robert Chemonges who hit the standard in Germany.

Chemonges, 19, clocked 2:10.31 well inside the 2:14.02 London World Championships qualification time.

The 19-year-old's qualification came on the heels of Peruth Chemutai whose 9:27 in the 3000m steeplechase got her into the London event, alongside Mercyline Chelangat who chalked 15:09 in the 5000m in the Shanghai Diamond League.

Chelangat's qualification had earlier been confirmed in Kampala, during the World Cross Country Championships 2017, where she finished among the top 15.

Uganda's prospective marathon line up in London also includes Alex Chesakit (2:14.02), Solomon Mutai (2:09.59) and Jackson Kiprop (2:14.00).

Joshua Cheptegei, who had a misadventure to forget at the Kampala World Cross Country Championships where his energy sapping and blistering pace wore him out dramatically, will feature in the 10,000m alongside Timothy Toroitich.
