This year’s national theme is "Connecting Nature, Appreciate Biodiversity"

Ibanda District Administration is set to host this year's national World Environment Day celebrations on Monday.

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to be the chief guest.

The national celebrations will be held at Ibanda Kibubura Integrated P/S grounds in Ibanda Municipality according to Elly Kirya the Ibanda district natural resources officer.

Several activities have been done prior to the date like the tree restoration exercise in Ibanda district and other regions of the country.

Also on Saturday, NEMA officials and the Ibanda district MPs and leadership also participated in Ibanda town street cleaning exercise as part of the activities organized for the celebrations.

The day which is celebrated every year on June 5th is the United Nations' principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment through the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

In Uganda, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) as the principal agency charged with the responsibility of coordinating, monitoring, regulating and supervising environmental management in the country, uses the celebrations as a platform to raise national awareness on the need to take positive environmental action and serving as the ‘people's day' for doing something positive for the environment.

This year's national theme is "Connecting Nature, Appreciate Biodiversity".

The Ibanda district chairperson Melichiadis Kajwengye says several meetings have been held in preparation for the day and thanked NEMA for selecting Ibanda district as the host of this national event.

"We shall use the opportunity to tell the masses and sensitize them about the dangers of swamps and forest encroachment which has resulted into global warming that has greatly affected the nature sequence" Kajwengye said while addressing the media in his office on Thursday.
