Nuwamanya said the facility has a presidential suite, VIP rooms and single rooms among others.

The construction of Women and Neonatal hospital at Mulago is in the final stages and expected to be completed in June.

At the moment 92 % of the works has been completed. The Principal Administrator Mulago hospital David Nuwamanya told New Vision in an interview that, oxygen plants, lifts, transformers, air condition and carpentry works among others have already been fixed.

The 320 bed capacity will offer specialised treatment for high risk antenatal Care, delivery and postnatal services, gynaecology services focusing on obstetric fistula and the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) among other complications.

Nuwamanya said they have already awarded tenders for all the equipment and awaiting delivery. The high class technological equipment  include Invitro equipment , external fertilization and embryo transplant, mammography, Ultra sound machines, X-rays , surgical equipment, Laboratory Intensive care (ICU) machines and medical beds.

"Some equipment however have already been delivered like the incubators, baby warmers, baggage scanners and CCTV cameras among others and soon will be fixed. We are also going to install display boards at the new facility for the patients to access information," he said.

The officials at Mulago are proposing to charge specialised services like invitro fertilization because some of these services are very expensive. The hospital is however waiting for parliament to approve the proposal.

Nuwamanya said the facility has a presidential suite, VIP rooms and single rooms among others.

According to experts, the hospital will only treat referral cases. The facility will improve maternal and new-born health care services, being done through improvement of infrastructure and supply equipment material.

Nuwamanya said the new facility will also introduce medical tourism. "If a tourist wants to come to Uganda but has a medical condition, he could come and have a condition worked on from this facility while he eventually goes to visit his sites. This will help us increase revenue base for the country.

Currently Mulago hospital is under renovation and reconstruction. Some of the patients who were getting services from this facility were transferred to Kawempe and Kiruddu health facilities.
