Guild polls underway at UCC Soroti

The battle for the guild president seat is between Isaac Okello and Julius Mupuya

Students of Uganda College of Commerce (UCC) Soroti go to polls today to elect their next guild president and other students representatives to the guild council.

Voting will starts at 7am and ends at 4pm.

The battle for the guild president seat is between Isaac Okello and Julius Mupuya all first year students pursuing diplomas in accounting.

Maureen Nakawoojwa and Scovia Acen are competing for the general secretary role while Lydia Masa and Gloria Atima are battling for assistant general secretary.

The race for female governor is between Joyce Mary Amongin and Constant Muzaki while Isaac Oonyu and Rogers Weswa compete from male governor.

Timothy Oseku and Israel Kiwalabye Tendo are contesting for minister of constitutional affairs while Anthony Edonu and Rebecca Kanyogo are contesting for minister of mess and agriculture.

The battle for information and foreign affairs minister is between Ivan Benard Olupot and Joab Owamanya while Rogers Wakooli and Anthony Eboku are competing for minister of campus affairs. 

Benard Hasahya and Abel Opolot (games and sports minister), candidates like Rachael Aguti and Edmond Christmas are tussling for health minister, while the contest for finance minister is between Dan Opolot and Hillary Nalonde.

Those competing for the post of disability minister are Harriet Akiteng and Yvonne Muyende while the race for entertainment minister is between Ashairaf Kirya and Pius Epasu.

Speaking during an open air campaign held at the college premises on Thursday, Isaac Okello assured students of his commitment to fight tribalism among students and promote students' welfare.

"The division based on tribes among us will be no more in this college once you give me your mandate" he said.

Julius Mupuya said he would cooperate with the college administration to ensure the internet is connected to the college to enable students carry out research without hassle.

"We pay a lot of money to café operators in order to access internet yet we pay for it at college but the administration has failed to provide us with internet but when I assume the office this will be history in this college" he said. 

The dean of students Florence Acanda appealed to students to carry their students IDs in order to participate in the exercise.

She observed that those without proper identification will not be allowed to vote.

The chairperson of the students' electoral commission, Jerry Elweu, warned students and candidates to observe electoral laws during voting.

"Students who will interfere with the exercise shall be arrested while the candidates who incite their supporters to fight shall be disqualified" the chairman said.
