Rugumayo gunning for hat trick of Mayombo Open wins

Toro Golf Club comes to life again Friday with close to 100 golfers in action as they compete for honours in the 10th edition the Mayombo Open Championship.

Defending champion Ronald Rugumayo leads the charge against home grown golfer and national team players like David Kamulindwa, Adolf Muhumuza, Richard Baguma and Ronnie Okot among others in the one-day annual championship.

Rugumayo who returned four-under-par 67 to win last year is aiming for his third title, having won in 2012 and last year. Adolf Muhumuza who was runner up last year is the biggest threat to his ambitions and one of the biggest contenders today.

Ian Kalema, Isaya Mwesige, Sharp Mwesige and Smart Bwango are also expected to be at their best in their pursuit for back to back in the men's Groups A-C.

Peace Kabasweka is the main contender in the ladies Group A but faces serious competition from golfers from Entebbe, Jinja and Mbarara.

According to Andrew Biryabalema the captain of Toro Club several other golfers from as far as Jinja, Kabale, Lugazi and some senior golfers from Kampala had confirmed their participation.

"We expect close to 100 golfers from across the country to compete," Biryabalema said.

The medal format of play tournament will have the top two outstanding players in the men Groups A-C as well as the ladies' A and B getting prizes.

Mayombo also a former New Vision chairman died in 2007 and since a golf tournament is played in his honour.
