A 30-year old peasant  identified as Lydia Kakai has been arrested by Mbale Police for allegedly stealing her neighbour' s baby.

Kakai, a resident of Jjungwe village, Bulera Sub-County, in Mityana district was arrested from Namatala village where she was found with the baby, who is two and a half months old.

The suspect was a neighbour to the mother of the baby, Salam Nakayeeze, 23, also a resident of Namatala village in Mbale district.

At the time the baby was stolen, the mother (Nakayeeze) had left it sleeping in the house and, had gone to the market. Her neighbour Kakai then got the chance to snatch the baby away from the house.

After some time, Nakayeeze came back from the market and found the baby missing.  She made an alarm that alerted her neighbours, who subsequently rushed to the scene and advised her to go to Mbale Police, to report the case.

Sofia Kisaakye, an eye-witness said that she saw Kakai carrying a baby away but she was not conscious of the mischief that was happening. This helped police to trace the baby's whereabouts.
