The police in Mayuge district have donated exercise books to over 600 pupils at St. Kizito  Kanyabwina primary school in Buwaya sub county.

Tomos Kamusiime, the officer in charge of Field Force Police who is also a pastor at Fellowship healing center in Mayuge district noted that a number of children had abandoned school due to lack of scholastic materials.

"Many children are dropping out of school due to lack of scholastic materials. We have come up with this strategy and we hope it will help children to be in school," Kamusiime who is the team leader said.

The Mayuge resident district commissioner, Sulaiman Ogajjo Barasa asked parents to play their responsibilities in homes in order to enable children attain a brighter future.

Ogajjo said that with universal primary and secondary education in the country, parents should atleast be able to cater for their children.

"The burden of school fees was lessened by the government through UPE and USE programs. Therefore,, we want every child to attain an education and it's the parent's obligation to provide scholastic materials and other needs," Ogajjo said.

Margret Munyana, the officer in charge of family and children's affairs said that a number of men are shunning family responsibilities and this affected the children's future.

"Many women in the district have complained that men have abandoned their responsibilities as far as welfare, education, and medical care is concerned, leaving them to shoulder the burden," She added that as a result, a number of children drop out of school since their mothers can't afford to cater for them while in school.

She noted that children from such affected families are victims of child labour and usually engage in fishing, stone quarrying, petty businesses and also work in sugarcane plantations as cane cutters to support their families.

Alice Nalongo Tamuzadde,  the headmistress of St.Kizito Kanyabwina primary school thanked the police for the initative but decried to the resident district commissioner over the poor conditions in the school.
She cited lack of enough class rooms a major a problem.

Kamusiime said that other schools will also benefit from the program.

"We are ready to donate exercise books to pupils in every school in Mayuge district. This is what we can do for communities in addition to our works," Kamusiime said.
