Voting is underway in Kamuli Municipality Parliamentary by-election.

The five-man contest one of the hotly contested by-elections is pitting NRM's Rehema Watongola against FDC's Salaamu Musumba. Others candidates are: Proscovia Naikoba Kanakutanda (Independent), Samuel Walugyo (Independent) and Mike Kiboome (Independent).

Court of Appeal ejected Watongola from Parliament for lack of minimum academic qualifications to become an MP.

Kamuli Municipality is made up of two sub-counties (divisions): Northern division and Southern division. The Municipality is located in the Eastern part of Uganda with 54 polling stations and 29,668 registered voters.

Citizens' Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) has deployed 40 community election observers to monitor the polls.

According to CCEDU Coordinator, Crispin Kaheru, the observers have been within Kamuli Municipality for the last one month.

"Whereas 40 election observers are permanently deployed at selected polling stations, CCEDU also has roving observers throughout the Municipality.  With such a robust deployment plan, CCEDU has presence at all polling stations and at the tallying center," he said.
