Makerere University has vowed to take tough actions against 70 fresh graduates who were awarded degrees in February without fulfilling the necessary requirements.

The University vice-chancellor Prof. Edward Dumba Sentamu told New Vision that a probe into the fraud in the university's results office has zeroed on the 70.

The probe was instituted recently after it emerged that the university's results system had been infiltrated by unknown people who introduced new marks.

Dumba-Sentamu said that members of staff who will be found guilty of abetting the crime will mercilessly be penalised while students will have to repeat their course.

The VC noted that after sneaking marks into the system in the results office, the fraudsters smuggled names of the beneficiaries to the graduation book.

The university last week withheld 14,895 transcripts for students who graduated in February suspecting that many of the names had illegally hit the list.

Dumba-Sentamu asked former students and members of the public to give the university three to four weeks to investigate the matter before starting to give out certificates.

On March 9, the university suspended four staff members from the Academic registrars department on suspicion that they participated in the fraud.

But university's Police have so far arrested two staff members and key suspects, Christopher Ntwatwa, a systems administrator in the academic registrar's office and Mike Barongo, an IT expert.
