Kamulindwa impresses as Africa Junior Championships tee-off

Toro Golf Club youngster David Kamulindwa shot a three-under-par 69 to inspire the Uganda national junior golf team to a fourth place start as the Africa Junior Golf Championship teed-off at the Royal Harare Golf Club on Tuesday.

Kamulindwa a rookie on the Uganda team was consequently second best to Zimbabwe's Justin Kersten who led the individuals scores with a five-under-par 67.

Kamulindwa almost turned the Royal Harare into his home course when he hit 6 birdies and three bogies in the first round.

Scores from the experienced members on the team Joseph Basalaine and Herman Mutebi were not those to be proud of but their 78 and 82 gross scores counted for Uganda to end the opening day in fourth place overall, out of 12 participating countries.

Team captain Dennis Asaba was just like Mutebi 10 strokes over with three more rounds to go.

Zimbabwe holds a one-stroke lead over defending champions South Africa going into the second round.

Re-Union is third, while Uganda and Morocco are joint fourth. The tournament acts as a qualifier to the Toyota World Junior Golf Championships which will be held in Japan in June.

The top two teams from the Africa tournament automatically qualify for the Japan event.

The annual championship has been dominated by defending champion South Africa who has won all competitions since Zimbabwe's last of three wins in 1998.
