Morale in Uganda’s camp has been boosted with the arrival of team captain Stephen Kiprotich.

The Olympic and world champion reported to the team’s base in Kapchorwa on Sunday.

He was granted permission to train in Kenya but is now with his teammates.

“We need his guidance given his status as a double gold medalist,” said his deputy Joshua Cheptegei Coach Benjamin Longiros is also upbeat that Kiprotich is with the rest of the team.

“His seniority is crucial in team building. He is also the athletes’ voice. His leadership skills will also be key on Sunday.”

Kiprotich said he would have little work as captain because of the level of fitness and determination.

“The team is in very good shape. They are running some great times. We are likely to pull off a great show.”

Kiprotich, who first had to attend to a sick mother, immediately exhibited his leadership skills by driving some of the athletes to and from Tuesday’s training at Sebei College Tegeres.

Cheptegei also drove some athletes and officials.

Kiprotich is Uganda’s most successful athlete having won gold at two of athletics’ biggest competitions. He also holds the national marathon record.
