Bible Society fundraises for braille Bibles

The visually impaired persons complain that due to lack of enough braille Bibles, their spiritual life is in tatters.

 

The Bible Society of Uganda has launched a fundraising drive for procurement of braille Bibles for people with visual impairment.

The visually impaired persons complain that due to lack of enough braille Bibles, their spiritual life is in tatters.

Ann Nakabuye said that visually impaired people want to take part in the reading of verses during church services on top of taking part in other church services like bible reading competitions among others but are limited due to lack of enough braille bibles.

"With braille Bibles, this will help us to learn a lot and also accept our situations and learn to adapt to it without stigmatization," she said.

The ‎Program Manager Bible society of Uganda, Justus Rubarema , said that braille Bibles are expensive to be afforded by the society alone yet they are given out for free.

Speaking during a charity walk to mobilise funds for procurement of braille Bibles, organized by the Bible society of Uganda in conjunction with Centenary bank and Movit, Rubarema explained that braille Bibles have got 37 portions and translating one is very expensive.

"We usually spend about sh2.3m to get one braille Bible and if you are to give each family with a blind person, it becomes a very big task but, we believe that it is very possible if we get people to stand with us," he pleaded.

Rubarema appealed to the general public to support the blind get the Holy Scripture.

Barbra Atwine the project coordinator explained that out of the 2.7million visually impaired people, only 47 have afforded the braille Bibles although about 30,000people have access to the 127 distributed in different institutions.

Abas Luyombya a blind student said that a braille Bible gives a chance to visually impaired people access the word of God without getting assistance.
