IAAF Kampala 2017: UAF casts financial net

The chance to strengthen financial partnerships has been made available.

National athletics body UAF are making the most of the opportunity to host the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

With the bump in the credibility of the UAF as host of a world event, the chance to strengthen financial partnerships has been made available, a chance the UAF have tried to exploit by strengthening their ties long-term partner MTN.

The UAF and MTN have been engaged in talks about the short term - that is a partnership on the World Cross Country Championships - and the long term. The latter relates to the extending the sponsorship agreement between the two parties although in the on-going talks, that idea has been kept off the discussion table.

"We currently have a contract with MTN although it's about to expire," explained UAF president Domenic Otucet. "But we are hopeful about a contract extension."

The two parties met last Thursday and MTN made a commitment "to give us some support for the World Cross Country Championships", as UAF general secretary Beatrice Ayikoru revealed.

"The details", she added "will be made official soon."

The World Cross Country Championships will be held Sunday in Kampala, with 51 countries expected to participate in the one-day competition that will include the 10km races for both women and men, the 6km race for junior women and the 8km race for junior men.

All four races are to be held in the afternoon. The junior races will precede the senior races, and the senior men's event will conclude the programme. The winner of the event will receive $30, 000.
