Involve spouses when acquiring guns - Kyeyune

Wakiso has got many guns because people want to protect themselves from criminals

Wakiso RDC Ian Kyeyune has said that people need to involve their spouses when acquiring guns for their security.

Kyeyune made the remarks while closing a one-day workshop in which 25 security personnel from Wakiso were trained on how people should acquire and manage small firearms.

He said that it's very vital to involve spouses because sometimes one party may get a firearm to kill the other and that is why both parties must agree and sign for the firearms to avoid any negative outcome.

Kyeyune further pointed out that there is increasing crime in Wakiso district because of the growing population adding that the district has got many guns because people want to protect themselves from the criminals.

He added that there are some people owning guns illegally and such guns need to be known and withdrawn if need be because the illegally owned firearms are the ones used to commit crimes in the district.

The RDC said that it's not allowed for one family to own more than one firearm saying that a family can sign for one gun such that they see how to effectively use it for protection.

He stated that if Uganda as a country is to be kept safe then Wakiso district must be safe, adding that there is no insecurity that threatens this country without passing through Wakiso district.

Anthony Nakhaima who is in charge of policy, legal and regulatory framework at the Ministry of Defence said that the training will go up to village level and the group trained is going to help in training others on small firearm management.

"We have started with the implementers of the program like UPDF, Police, local government and some councillors and then later the training will go to the last person" Nakhaima said.
