The winners of the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards will be announced at a red carpet event in Lagos, Nigeria. And the series will know just how far it has come.

Whatever happens this Saturday, the Ugandan television drama series Beneath The Lies will celebrate an achievement that very few such productions in Uganda, if any, have attained.

The winners of the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards will be announced at a red carpet event in Lagos, Nigeria. And the series will know just how far it has come.

The locally produced TV series has been nominated for Best Television Series in what have been dubbed ‘Africa’s Oscars’. It is up against three series from Nigeria (Jenifa’s Diary, Duplicity, Beyond your Sight), and one from South Africa (Sokhulu and Partners).

It has been a long and hazardous journey to being nominated for the continent’s premier awards.

Initially supposed to start airing in 2014, all the material and content for the first 12 episodes were stolen during a party to celebrate the wrap up of the filming. To this day it has never disclosed what really happened, who stole the material and why.

Shooting started again in early 2016 with a new crew, and the series started airing again on Urban TV in July of the same year.

The drama-mystery series were created and written by Nana Kagga McPherson, and the plot revolves around the seedy underbelly of Kampala.

It boasts of a cast full of local celebrities, including Flavia Tumusiime, Cedric Babu Ndilima, Natasha Sinayobye, Gaetano Kagwa, Hellen Lukoma, Rabadaba, Salvador Idringi, and Susan Naava.

The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv, Saturday  from 18:00 Ugandan time.
