Dry spell affects local tourism sector

"We did not have any incident of loss of animals because of drought."

The prolonged dry spell has affected the Ugandan tourism sector.

Bonifance Byamukama, the president of the Uganda Tourism Association, says the drought left the sector stuck in food scarcity which made business difficult for hoteliers because of the high food prices.

Byamukama is however optimistic that the sector will recover, thanks to the rainy season that has started.

"There was drought in the last three months in Uganda although animals had to move for long distances looking for water. We did not have any incident of loss of animals because of drought," he says.

"Of course we had a challenge, especially those who are operating hotels and in the national parks.  There was scarcity of food but it was not too much because they would also come and buy in the big towns around the country."
