The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has asked Catholics and all Ugandans to emulate the good examples of the late Archbishop Dr. Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka. He described Kiwanuka as an intelligent and visionary prelate, who promoted ecclesial unity and national development.

"Dr. Joseph Kiwanuka brought enormous honour to the country when he became the first ever black African Bishop. During his episcopate in Masaka, he helped his people to attain holistic development. He encouraged people to work. He also sent many people to Europe and the US to study professions like commerce."

Who was Archbishop Kiwanuka?

The Most Rev. Archbishop Dr. Joseph Nakabaale Kiwanuka hailed from Nakirebe, in Mpigi District.  He studied at Bukalasa Seminary and Katigondo National Major Seminary before his ordination to priesthood.

Kiwanuka destroyed the myth of African academic inferiority when he got a first class Doctoral degree in Canon Law in Rome. He further elevated Uganda and Africa, when Pope Pius XII appointed him as the first ever Black African Bishop South of the Sahara, in 1939.

Earlier, Kiwanuka had made history when he became the first ever native Ugandan to join the ranks of the Catholic Missionary Society of White Fathers. Kiwanuka is also remembered for his contribution to Uganda's political independence and democratic governance.
