Isingiro heads of schools cautioned on student performances

Isingiro district still has students who passed in fourth grade and others were ungraded
The Isingiro District Education officer, Nathan Kabikire, has called on all heads of schools to ensure the learning environment of every child in schools is improved if they don't want to be fired from their jobs.
Kabikire said though the district has registered an increase in students' performance in last year's exams from 9% average grade one passes to 17.5%, the district still has students who passed in fourth grade and others were ungraded which he too said must be eliminated.
He attributed this to absenteeism of pupils and teachers, limited parent involvement in the education of their children and their failure to pack food for them for lunch. He cautioned schools that have stagnated to ensure the trend is arrested.
Kabikire made the comments while addressing parents, students and teachers of Kigaragara Vocational Secondary School, one of the very few schools that had students who scored grade one in UCE. The event which also doubled as a thanksgiving ceremony for the best students, took place at school's premises.
He advised students in candidate classes this year to be disciplined which he said is the basis of good academic performance. He challenged them to ensure they attend all lessons regularly and revise.
Rev. Denis Kizinduka, the secretary Ankole Diocese, advised parents to invest all the monies they have in the education of their children to enable them become responsible people in the future. He cautioned them against spending money on alcohol.
Kizinduka observed that most parents instead of spending their money on educating their children have resorted to drinking alcohol especially those with pupils in UPE and USE schools.
Julius Begumya, headmaster Kigaragara Vocational SS, called for more government support to rural schools saying many are performing badly because they have not been given equal support like urban schools.
"Most of these schools have no laboratories, libraries and students pass by the mercy of God" Begumya said.
