Police drivers allegedly flouting traffic rules

Some cops drive while drunk whereas some commanders misuse vehicles by carrying person goods such as cement, animals, food.

While Police is mandated to enforce law and order, some Police drivers including Police commanders are in the habit of breaking the law.

According to Sulaiman Kirungi, the acting deputy director of fleet management in the Uganda Police, Police drivers have been in the habit of drink-driving.

"I am told that some drivers drive cars while drink. In case of any accident resulting from reckless or drunk-driving, that particular driver faces immediate suspension from driving," he stated.
 
Speaking to New Vision on the sidelines of Regional Police fleet managers and maintenance workshop in Kampala on Monday, he said incase a driver commits an error on roads and he is arrested by traffic officers, he is charged personally.

"After he has been taken to court, he can also face the Police Standards Unit,"he said.

Kirungi also cautioned District and Regional Police Commanders against the misuse of Police vehicles. He said once anybody falls a victim, the vehicle shall be confiscated.
