Edith Byanyima (pictured), sister to Winnie Byanyima, the wife of former Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, has failed to turn at the Special Investigations Directorate in Kireka.

Byanyima had been summoned to appear at the SID on Monday at 10am for an interview and later make a statement regarding Police investigations into a case of promoting sectarianism and incitement to violence.

Byanyima however told New Vision that she was unable to turn up saying she already had other engagements, which she did not elaborate.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Emilian Kayima confirmed that Byanyima had informed Police that she would instead appear at Kireka on Tuesday.

Kayima said that the state was concerned that she uttered sectarian statements which have been circulating on social media and decided to summon her to that effect.  He said Byanyima is treated as a suspect in the case.

Byanyima is alleged to have uttered the statements after a group of legislators and relatives of Kenneth Akena attacked her and her sister Winnie Byanyima for turning up at the High Court to stand surety for Matthew Kanyamunyu, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and his brother Joseph Kanyamunyu who are accused of killing Akena.
