Girls between 12-19 years were considered for the camp that is happening at Pentagon High School, Rwakaraba in Kabale municipality.

Girls from the districts of Kabale, Rubanda and Kisoro have been taught various life skills in the first ever cultural camp in Kigezi region.

The event organized by Save the Girl Child Uganda and Kabale OVC Organisations Network started on Monday and ends on Saturday.

According to Kellen Mashemererwa, the Director Save the Girl Child Uganda and one of the events organisers, it was aimed at enhancing the capacity of girls in participation through skills development, cultural awareness and health education.

She said that most girls lack enough opportunities of acquiring the basic life skills nowadays due to the prevailing situations.

"Most parents are busy and some cannot afford to teach their children even how to do the smallest domestic work. This is a threat to their future, "said Mashemererwa.

Girls between 12-19 years were considered for the camp that is happening at Pentagon High School, Rwakaraba in Kabale municipality.

"We choose these teenagers because at this age they risk to adopt foreign cultures that may lead to the erosion of their original cultural expectations," said Mashemererwa.

Ann Tinka, the Chairperson Kabale OVC networks said that in the one week camp, girls were trained about their traditional conduct, reproductive health, sanitation and personal hygiene, self-esteem, and career development among other life skills.

Tinka said that they were shocked to find some girls ignorant about some of the domestic works like cooking, organising a home and also washing clothes.
