Ugandan youngsters eye US Open Taekwondo championships

Five Ugandan Taekwondo players will compete against the World's best.

At least five Ugandan Taekwondo players are out to impress in the US Open Taekwondo Championships due Jan 30 - Feb 3.

The New Vision has learnt that Samuel Ochaya, Oswaldo Ocira, Elizabeth Okello Royson Okwera, and Cranima Wekurwoth, will compete against the World's best.

For Royson Okwera and Oswaldo Ocira, they are no strangers in the event having successfully competed in the previous edition.

Off record, Oswaldo Ocira, 15, scooped two gold medals in the main combat under the 48kg sparring category and  in the  exhibition sparring event as Royson Okwera, 17, who featured in the cadet's category of the event, bagged gold in the combinations pattern and sparring event during the previous edition.

For the second time running, Ethiopian Airlines are back to support the team of the youngsters who are holding their hats for the event which comes at the right time when Uganda is looking to qualify martial artists at the Olympics for the first time in history.

"We are ready to make our presence felt at the event that will attract world class perfomers" said Ahmed Bamuwayira, the coach for the youngsters from Children Sports Charity Academy in Mbuya. He however added that they are still short of the required funds despite the offer from Ethiopian Airlines.

Abebe Angessa, the Ethioian Airlines country manager pledged on behalf of  the company to continue support the youth through sports. He made the remarks  before handing over sponsorship for the team on Saturday at the Ethiopian Airlines head quarters.​
