Speaking to Radio Rupiny, Dr. Masiira said the Red eye disease which broke out in detention facilities of Gulu last year is still not completely wiped out of the district.

A epidemiologist from the ministry of health, Dr. Ben Masiira has advised residents in Gulu to continue washing their hands with clean water and soap in a bid to prevent the red eye disease infection.

Speaking to Radio Rupiny, Dr. Masiira said the Red eye disease which broke out in detention facilities of Gulu last year is not completely wiped out of the district.

He said although cases of infections have reduced, the public still needs to take precautions to avert new infection

He says that almost six people who acquired the disease had almost gone blind after failing to get treatment on time.

The disease which affected a total of 854 inmates in detention centres including Lugore prison, Gulu central prison, Pece prison, children's remand home and major police cells was reportedly spread by a suspect who was arrested on November 14, 2016 from Layibi division and detained at Gulu central police station.

Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu district LC 5 chairperson said that the district is working hand in hand with the health team to handle the outbreak.
