Strong Ugandan presence at CAF Awards

Jan 04, 2017

This is Uganda’s biggest representation ever at the prestigious annual event.

Uganda will have a strong presence at the Glo Confederation of Africa Football Awards slated for Thursday.

Uganda has nominees in three categories on the awards night that will be held in the Nigerian capital Abuja.

Africa Champions League winner Denis Onyango is Uganda's favourite at the awards that also feature Cranes coach Milutin Sredojevich and national football team The Cranes.

Onyango is one of the three nominees for the player of the year award for players based in Africa.

He is competing with Zimbabwean forward Khama Billiat and Zambian midfielder Rainford Kalaba.

Billiat, who is Onyango's team-mate at Mamelodi Sundowns, is also a Champions League winner while TP Mazembe's Rainford Kalaba is a CAF Confederations Cup winner.

Sredojevic, who led Uganda to her first Nations Cup in 38 years, is lined up for coach of the year.

The Cranes, who last year were also impressive in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, complete Uganda's strong presence at the awards night.

Sredojevic is competing against Florent Ibenge (Congo), Pitso Mosimane (S/Africa), Mo Bejala (Algeria), Florence Omagbemi (Nigeria).

The Cranes are contesting with DR Congo, Guinea Bissau, Nigeria U-023, and Senegal.

This is Uganda's biggest representation ever at the prestigious annual event sponsored by telecommunication giant Globacom.

Onyango arrived in Abuja onTuesday. He will thereafter join the Cranes for a build-up match in Dubai before the team connects to Gabon for the 2017 AFCON finals.
