NCHE gets own home

The President said that the relevant science and technologies will depend on the skills that developing countries have.

President Yoweri Museveni has urged developing countries to embrace practical science and technology if they are to overcome their problems and achieve sustainable growth.

In a speech read for him by thee Vice President during the commissioning of Uganda National Council for Higher education new building in Kyambogo, the President said that the relevant science and technologies will depend on the skills that developing countries have.

Museveni noted that higher education was the only mechanism that can produce and sustain availability of a skilled manpower for socio-economic advancement of any nation and challenged Uganda Council for Higher Education to align its focus in line with vision 2040 towards the country's middle income status.

The President said that higher education in most of the developing countries has been devoid of real practical skills that can address issues affecting their communities focusing mainly on primary and tertiary education which, he said only produce job seekers.

He said that the NRM Government has prioritized education saying that higher education has since 1986 recorded increased enrolment from 10,000 students to about 25,000 by last year and universities increased from only Makerere to 9 public and 38 private universities.

The President challenged institutions of higher learning to prove their relevancy by providing purposeful education producing graduates with desired skills and the right attitude.
