Tumuhimbise is the new UNATU boss

Teachers under their umbrella body, Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) have elected new office bearers.

Zadock Tumuhimbise a primary school head teacher of Nyeikunama in Kabale district is the new UNATU chairperson. He polled 278 votes against his rival Gonza Ssensamba who got 176 votes.

Tumuhimbise replaces Margaret Rwabushushaija Namubiru who served until this year when she was elected a workers' MP.

"The voice of teachers has spoken and I think this is a gift to the teachers of Uganda. I am ready to push for the better welfare of teachers, promotion issues and focus on teacher professionalism," a jovial Tumuhimbise said.

He pledged to work with teachers to better the performance of pupils especially in public schools that has been widely criticized.

The outgoing chairperson Rwabushushaija advised her successor to serve the union diligently by working as a team.

Mary Josephine Nabuyungo a teacher of Naggalama Mixed School was elected the vice while Dorothy Kirabo of City High School was voted the National treasurer.

Others are John Ssali of St-Theresa Bwanda in Kalungu (vice national treasurer), Grace Aida of Ayivu SSS in Arua is the new national secretary for planning.

Francis Ochieng a teacher of Industrial view Primary School in Tororo (secretary for education), Jervezious Bwambale of Mubuku Primary School in Kasese, (secretary for disputes and welfare) and Okiror Mary Jacinta Ikima a head teacher of Usuk Primary School in Katakwi (secretary for women affairs).
