Matembe tips varsity students on leadership

She emphasized the need for young women to rise up against bad customary and traditional norms, economic dependency, fear and complacency.

The former Minister of Integrity and National Guidance, Miria Matembe, has advised university students to take up leadership positions so as to promote good governance.

Matembe was speaking at Areba Hotel in Entebbe during the democracy camp for university female students meant to encourage them to aspire for leadership positions in the communities they live in.

The democracy camp aimed at mentoring young women into leadership was organized by the Centre for Women in Governance and it attracted students from Bugema University, Uganda Christian University and Kyambogo University.

Matembe emphasized that young women should take central role in leadership in order to promote good governance and development.

 

"Leadership and development in the modern world cannot be left to men alone. Women involvement is a must for good governance, social and economic welfare for citizens," Matembe said.

She said both women and men should equally participate in the decision making process in the country at all levels. She told students that they can't afford to be left behind in influencing governance agenda in the country

"Uganda today needs women who can boldly take on leadership roles and influence policies that govern this country," she stated.She encouraged students not to fear participating in political leadership.

She observed that women count and are capable of making decisions at council level, family, regarding food security and constitutional matters.

She emphasized the need for young women to rise up against bad customary and traditional norms, economic dependency, fear and complacency.

Noreen Nampewo, the program officer of Centre for Women in Governance urged participants to take up leadership roles at the university and communities so that they can advocate for good policies for good governance.

The participants were also equipped with skills of public speaking.
