A group of legislators has launched a campaign to raise sh28b to pay Makerere University lectures.

The ‘friends of Makerere' are led by Ntungamo Municipality MP, Gerald Karuhanga who is a former Makerere guild president.

They launched the fundraising campaign at Parliament on Wednesday evening.

"We are targeting 600,000 well-wishers. If each contributes sh50, 000, it will yield sh30b to pay the lectures," Karahanga explained.

According to Karuhanga, Makerere has a student population of over 50,000 students, whose parents and guardians can contribute towards the noble cause.

Karuhanga said they are opening up a bank account with Centenary bank Mapeera House in Kampala where well-wishers will deposit their contribution.

"We shall publish the bank account number," Karuhanga clarified.

Kilak county MP Gilbert Oulanya said:  "This is a matter of national concern, irrespective of our political affiliations; we are requesting government to re-open the university, because parents, students, and the country at large are affected."

President Yoweri Museveni on November 2, 2016 ordered for closure of Makerere University which was embroiled with lecturers' and students' strikes.

The Presidential directive was taken to guarantee the safety of persons and property.
