President Yoweri Museveni appointed a visitation committee of inquiry into the affairs of the university

Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidates, Dr. Kizza Besigye, says the newly appointed visitation committee to probe Makerere University was uncalled for.

Besigye who was addressing the journalists at his home in Kasangati, said there is already another report by Prof. Francis Omaswa which has never been addressed.

"That report regrettably has never been addressed just like many other reports. We still have the Omaswa report on our table. So actually Mr. Rwendeire should not waste public money again; he can pick up the Omaswa report and present it to government because it was prompted by the same issue" he said.

President Yoweri Museveni appointed a visitation committee of inquiry into the affairs of the university. The team is led by Dr. Abel Rwendeire.

Others are Lady Justice Keturah Katunguka, the vice chairperson, Auditor General John Muwanga, former Ethics Minister Tim Lwanga, Dr. Florence Muranga, Dr. Proscovia Namubiru Sentamu, Dr. Paul Musasizi, Dr. Kisoro and Eng. Lumu.

The committee has a time frame of three months to present a report, which Besigye said is just wastage of resources.

The university was closed early this month, following a lecturers' strike.

Besigye advised that the Omaswa report should form the focus on what is going on to avoid unnecessary inquiries.

He said tertiary institutions and universities have got deep problems which are a reflection of the overall governance of the country; "the corruption, corruption in appointments, procurement and everywhere".
