Police will stay deployed at the school until the candidates finish their exams

Police in Kabale last evening contained a students' strike at Kigezi College, Butobere.

Police swung into action on the invitation from the school administration about a strike that had started at the school last evening.

According to the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, the strike started after a section of senior four candidates who were sitting their last UNEB exams got into a disagreement with other members of the school.

The situation became volatile when the students started throwing stones at building at the school which prompted the school authorities to call Police who managed to drive the violent students off the premises.

Maate added that Police will stay deployed at the school until the candidates finish their exams.

"We condemn acts of violence in schools especially during this time. We shall not tolerate these behaviours. All students should behave themselves well in such times of exams" he said.

Joseph Twiine Muganga the school head teacher said that it has been a regular practice amongst the students to fight their colleagues in candidate classes who usually mistreat them during their time at the school.

"Students in other classes have a tendency of disciplining candidates especially in S.4 whose character is not to their expected standards. When some candidates suspected this action against them, they started throwing stones to scare away the attackers" said Muganga.

On Tuesday, students woke up to a sit down strike refusing to take their breakfast until an emergency assembly was held.

This saw the school return to its normal routine and the remaining O'Level candidates were allowed to sit their final examinations amidst tight Police supervision.
