FUFA is not registered, says gov't

“FUFA is not yet registered. It has to be a trust and not a registered company because football is a public good."

The Ministry of Education and Sports officials have said the football body in Uganda, FUFA, is not registered, calling upon organs responsible for football to quickly normalise the situation.

Speaking at the 12th annual education and sports sector planning and budgeting workshop, Omara Apita, the commissioner physical education and sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports said football is a public good that must be managed under a trust and not a company like the current FUFA establishment.

"FUFA is not yet registered. It has to be a trust and not a registered company because football is a public good. So, as a ministry, we expect the National Council of Sports to normalise the issue immediately," he said.

Omara's remarks have come at a time when the legal status of FUFA is under spotlight after a group of former national team players led by Dan Walusimbi contested the current establishment led by FUFA president Moses Magogo.

On Monday, Walusimbi led a group of ex-Cranes footballers and well-wishers to FUFA premises in Mengo demanding the current crop of leaders to vacate the headquarters.

Walusimbi claimed that he is the FUFA president, following acquisition of a certificate of incorporation as a trustee.

He said the certificate was issued by the National Council of Sports, a body that controls sports in the country on behalf of Government.

On the other hand, the Magogo group also claimed that it was registered legally.
