Lira diocese mourns Father Maguire

He was born in June, 27 1933 in Ireland and took his last vow in 1959 before he was ordained in 1960

Lira Catholic Diocese is in mourning following the death of Fr Vincent Anthony Maguire, an outstanding Comboni Missionary who worked at the diocese for over 40 years

Maguire has left a lasting imprint on the lives of students and pupils.  

The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rev Joseph Franzeli said in a statement that Maguire played a leading role in promoting education in Lango, especially at Comboni College in Lira.

"We mourn the death of Fr Maguire for his commitment and love for education," Bishop Franzeli said in a statement on Monday.

Maguire passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 83 when he succumbed to cancer.

Franzeli said he will be missed by students and Christians who he mentored while working as a priest.

He was born in June, 27 1933 in Ireland and took his last vow in 1959 before he was ordained as priest on February 7th 1960. He worked as a Comboni Missionary at Lira catholic diocese between 1960 and 1977 and between 1988 and 2011.  

In February 2015, President Yoweri Museveni in his speech on the occasion of centenary celebrations of the Catholic Church in Kitgum congratulated the Comboni Missionaries for the development they have carried out in Kitgum.
