Prof. Mondo Kagonyera was Friday installed as the first chancellor of Kabale University.

The event, which took place at the campus premises was presided over by the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni.

Kagonyera received the tools of power such as the chancellor's maze, University code and other administrative tools.

The installation of Prof. Kagonyera was in relation to Section 30 of the University and Tertiary institutions act.

While speaking at the function, which also saw the graduation of 2,120 graduands, President Museveni asked universities to emphasise the teaching of courses that encourage job creation.

"An education system that produces people who cannot get jobs or create their own is useless. Rationalise your courses to produce graduates that are needed on the job market," said Museveni.

He further condemned the increasing strikes in institutions of higher learning, saying that this is limiting their effectiveness.

"This culture of pressurising government to provide services in institutions of higher learning must stop. I ask the Kabale University community not to stain the good record of this university," added Museveni.

After his installation, Mondo Kagonyera vowed to work closely with the University community to ensure its development as a centre of quality education in the region.

Kagonyera called for dialogue and amicable means in solving the transitional crisis that is currently rocking Kabale University.

"Leave strikes to sugarcane cutters. We have a more diplomatic way of solving problems. This university is here to serve interests of our communities not individuals," added Kagonyera.

State Minister for Higher Education, Chrysestom Muyingo said the Government shall ensure the promotion of a good environment that enables institutions attain their goals in the provision of quality education.

Prof. Joy Kwesiga, the University Vice-chancellor said despite their wish to provide efficient education, they are still struggling with poor infrastructure, limited financing and transitional challenges which led to the recent strikes at the university.

"We need more infrastructure in the faculties of Engineering and medicine, a modern library, science laboratory and computer laboratory," said Kwesiga.
