Mpigi residents decry land grabbing

Local council leaders were accused of conniving with the land grabbers

Mpigi residents have expressed concern over widespread land grabbing in the area by unknown people which has left many without land to cultivate on.

They allege that land grabbers connive with the local council leaders in different areas to grab people's land.

"Right now many of us have been chased away from our land and have nowhere to cultivate from. People come with land titles and claim ownership. We need help because we are about to become homeless if nothing is done," one of the residents noted.

The residents disclosed this during the handover of maize seeds by Minister for Trade and Cooperatives, also MP for Mawokota North, Amelia Kyambadde.  She gave them 1,500kgs of maize seeds.

They also demanded for the election of new local council leaders; saying the current leaders are only using their offices for selfish gains.

Kyambadde condemned the act, and promised to institute investigations to net the culprits and resolve the matter.

"There is no way we can move to middle income status when people have no land. Where will they cultivate from and do other projects? I will not allow this in my area," she vowed.

She promised to continue lobbying for her constituents and follow up government projects to make sure everything goes to the right beneficiaries.
