Kabale University student pins RDC, DPC on assault

The Kabale deputy RDC, Dennis Nzeirwe and the Kabale District Police Commander Dickens Bindeba have been accused of assaulting a Kabale University student during a demonstration on Friday.

Nicholas Byonanabye, a third year Information Technology student at the university claims that he was assaulted by Nzeirwe and Bindeeba who accused him of masterminding the  students' strike.

He told New Vision that he went to Kabale Police Station to report a case of assault against the two but he was whisked away by the officers.

Byonanebye said he was referred to the district CIID chief who they said has jurisdiction over such administrative cases.

Bruno Kukundakwe of Bitwenda and Company Advocates said that they received instructions from Byonanabye to sue the RDC and the DPC, and that despite Police's reluctance to handle the matter, they say they will procure private prosecutors.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesman said the assault on the student was an unfair move and Police should have given him a chance to report the case.

However Nzeirwe said that his action was in reaction to an attack from Byonanebye.

"This student started it all. He fought me when we were trying to calm down the situation" said Nzeirwe.
