Rukunya won the event on the fourth time of asking, having been runner up at the same event in 2014.

The Ugandan seed 2 beat Kenya's Billy Josa 3-0 in the final to win Ksh35,000 (sh1.5m). He had earlier beaten Hussein Moiz and Roy Mugambi in the semis and quarterfinals respectively.

He will now head to the Parkaland Open where he has never won, in high spirits, and is eager to leave a mark despite the tough competition that waits.

"It was a good warm up for the Parkland Open in November where prize money is even bigger and the competition even much higher, so I will continue working hard and go for it" Rukunya said.

"For the first time I put in two solid months of training in the gym, road work and drills with my dad Simon Kajubu who doubles as my coach, the reason I was able to win" Rukunya added.

After the Parkland Open, Rukunya will head to Dar es Salaam where he will compete in the Uhuru Open, December 9-11.

Ahead of the Kenya and Tanzania tournaments, Rukunya will warm up for the foreign tournaments on home soil when he competes in the Kabira Open, October 27-29, where he will meet some of the opponents that he will face in the Kenya tournaments.
