Special High Court session to handle 40 cases in Iganga

Witnesses were urged to come and testify before court to enable quick expedition of the cases

A special high court criminal session in Iganga is to handle 40 cases starting October 24th this year.

The special criminal court session is to be presided over by Justice Michael Elubu.

Majority of the cases that are to be handled were committed between 2011-15 in the districts of Iganga, Namutumba, Bugiri, Namayingo, Mayuge, Luuka and Kaliro.

According to a release signed by the deputy registrar of the Jinja High Court, Jesse Byaruhanga, 16 of the cases will be of murder, 18 of aggravated defilement, while 3 will be of robbery and one is of aggravated trafficking.

Among the prominent cases is that of a 56-year-old peasant farmer who allegedly defiled and infected a 4-year-old girl with HIV/AIDS in Namayingo district in 2013.

The victim is currently being taken care of by a local non-governmental organization, Friends of Children based in Bugiri.

The Iganga chief magistrate, Godfrey Kawesi urged members of the public to turn up in big numbers to witness the official opening ceremony of the special session on October 17th.

Kawesi also urged witnesses to come to testify before court to enable quick expedition of the cases.

The court session is expected to last for a period of one month.
