Parents were urged to take advantage of Universal Primary Education and Universal Secondary Education

Soroti residents have been told to take the advantage of the Uganda's earlier earned independence for development.

The urge was made by Paul Omer, the mayor of Soroti Municipality during the district's 54th Independence celebrations held at Soroti Sports Grounds on Tuesday.

Omer said that people of Teso and all the regions of the country should be able to utilize independence for developing new strategies of fighting poverty in families.

According to Omer some locals in Teso oppose government programs by demanding for too much compensation for their land whenever government programs are launched.

He said that people should become government ambassadors by showing a willingness to support government by either accepting to evacuate the land upon government's identification to establish development programs in such areas.

"Locals' opposition to government programs derails leaders from following up development programs with the government" Omer stated.

John Stephen Ekoom, the Soroti RDC who was the guest of honour at the function urged the local leaders to take a lead in sensitizing people about the importance of baking government programs.

According to him many people in the district end up selling items offered by the government for their own benefits because the leaders don't adequately sensitize them.

He further emphasized parents to take advantage of Universal Primary Education and Universal Secondary Education for educating their children.

"Now we have Soroti University that will open next near, I would emphasise that we spend our efforts in educating children on science courses" Ekoom stated.

Ekoom added that people should utilize the government's project of Operation Wealth Creation for improving their standards of living in their communities.

He promised that government is focused on ensuring that the youth and women benefit since they are the majority population in the country which is faced with the challenge of unemployment.
