Brothers lynched over alleged theft

Police in Savannah Region have condemned a Friday incident in which a mob of villagers in Bamunanika went on rampage lynching two brothers and beating their father into a comma accusing the victims of stealing items from a shop belonging to a resident.

The incident which took place at Kiwanula Village in Bamunanika County in Luweero District, followed the recovery of the alleged stolen items from one of the victims' home.

The Savannah Region Police spokesperson Vincent Sekate on Friday identified the two brothers as Geoffrey Sembeewo and Henry Kitaka both sons of Wilson Segawa, a resident of Kiwanula.

Sekate said the mob first recovered the items from the home of Segawa after which they went on rampage.

The LC1 chairman Kiwanula Village, Tofiri Mugwanya, said that prior to the incident, unknown people had recently broken into a shop stealing a mattress, a television and a wheel barrow all of which were later recovered from Segawa's house.

According to the LC1 chairman, the irate villagers then mounted a hunt for the two brothers.

Police spokesman Vincent Sekate said Police arrived at the scene when the villagers had already set the bodies of the dead victims on fire.

Sekate said Police condemned the action and said all those who were involved would be hunted and brought to book.
